An airplane mode is a setting that prevents your mobile device from receiving radio signals. It is also called airplane mode, flight mode, offline mode, or standalone mode.
The model is so named because most airlines prohibit the use of devices that emit RF signals during flight. As cell phones have become more commonplace over the past decade, some airplane pilots' communications headsets register an audible click when a cell phone on the plane transmits a signal. This mode helps disable the phone's cellular receiver or circuitry, effectively turning off the phone, either for the entire phone or just for a specific application.
As a rule, it is not possible to make calls or send messages in flight mode, but some smartphones allow calls to emergency services. Some mobile devices allow continued use of email clients. Other apps allow sending messages via text or email. Messages stored in memory are transferred when flight mode is turned off.
