Cryptocurrency, also known as digital or virtual currency, is a decentralized form of currency that allows users to conduct peer-to-peer transactions without the need for intermediaries such as banks or governments. The most well-known cryptocurrency is Bitcoin. Currently, there are thousands of other cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum, Litecoin, Solana, and Binance Coin.

Cryptocurrencies are created and stored electronically through a process called mining, in which powerful computers solve complex mathematical problems to verify and record transactions in a distributed ledger called the blockchain. The blockchain is a decentralized ledger that records all transactions and ensures that the system is transparent, secure, and tamper-proof.

Cryptocurrencies are also highly volatile, as their value often fluctuates widely depending on market supply and demand. This has led to concerns about the speculative nature of cryptocurrencies and their potential to destabilize financial markets.
