Home automation, also called domotics, involves the use of building automation technology to create a smart house or apartment. A home automation system enables the monitoring and control of various home functions such as lighting, climate, entertainment systems and appliances, as well as security functions such as access control and alarm systems. When these devices are connected to the Internet, they become an integral part of the Internet of Things (IoT).
Typically, a home automation system connects the controlled devices to a central hub or gateway. Users can operate the system through various interfaces, such as wall-mounted terminals, tablet or desktop computers, cell phone applications, or a web interface that can be accessed remotely over the Internet.
Although numerous vendors compete in the home automation market, there is an increasing trend towards open source systems. However, the current state of home automation still presents some challenges, including the lack of standardized security measures and the obsolescence of older devices without backward compatibility.
