3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a process for creating three-dimensional objects from a digital design by applying successive layers of material. It was introduced in the 1980s by Chuck Hull, who invented a technology called stereolithography (SLA), which uses a laser to cure layers of resin to create a solid object.

In 3D printing, a digital 3D model of the object to be printed is first created using CAD software. This model is then broken down into thin layers by the 3D printer's software. The 3D printer then creates the object layer by layer, adding material on top of the previous layer until the object is complete. The materials used in 3D printing can vary depending on the printer, but commonly used materials include plastics, metals, ceramics, and even food and living tissue. 
This printing process is used in a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, healthcare, architecture and fashion. It has revolutionized the manufacturing industry by enabling rapid prototyping, customization and low-volume production of complex parts and objects.
