A microcontroller is a small and compact integrated circuit used to control a specific function or set of functions in an electronic system. It contains a microprocessor, memory, and input/output peripherals on a single chip and is typically used in embedded systems to control devices and perform specific tasks. Microcontrollers are often used in applications where a full-blown computer or more powerful processor is not required and where low power consumption, compact size and low cost are important factors.

They are used in a wide variety of applications, including industrial control systems, automotive systems, medical devices, home appliances, consumer electronics, and many others. They are especially popular in embedded systems, which are electronic systems designed for specific tasks, such as controlling the temperature in a room, monitoring the position of a motor, or measuring the flow of liquid in a pipeline.

The basic function of a microcontroller is to receive input signals from the sensors, process the signals using the built-in microprocessor, and then generate output signals to control the connected devices.
