Biometrics is basically derived from two Greek words. They are bio, meaning life, and metric, meaning measure. Therefore, biometrics is a measure of a person's biological characteristics. No two people have the same biometric characteristics, from fingerprints to palm prints to facial deformities. Not even twins have the same biometric characteristics. All biometric systems are made up of three components:
- A reader or sensor for capturing and scanning the biometric factor used for identification
- A software or program that converts stored data into digital formats and compares the new data with the stored data.
- A database in which the biometric data is stored so that the program can perform a comparison check.
