Wide area networks (WAN) are the systems that enable Internet connections across different areas. They can support communication between computers that are physically separated from each other, often over long distances.
These networks enable enterprises to extend their network coverage, access content stored in remote offices, provide remote support, share content and perform other functions that are impossible or impractical with local area networks (LAN).
To build a wide area network (WAN), you need to lay the groundwork for a WAN. Your Internet gateway must be able to offer many different types of connections that are suitable for all your users. These include dial-up, broadband and wireless connections. Your Internet gateway should provide both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint connections.
